In the next release of our Discovery series giving you the opportunity to explore and taste some of the best new innovators and producers in the Natural Wine World, we feature British mavericks, Renegade Urban Winery.
Renegade isn't a traditional producer as they don't have a vineyard and instead buy their grapes depending on quality from growers in the UK and as far and wide as Albania. This may seem mad to a lot of traditionalists however a great line/description on their about us page is "Just like a chef who can select in-season vegetables from the best growers, we can change suppliers and pick the best grapes depending on the weather, regional variances and other external factors" which when you think about it seems obvious right? Why have the restraints of having to use the same grapes year in year out even if you know the previous vintage was better? Anyway, we have long been fans of these guys not because of their ethos and culture or their incredibly original labelling but because their wines absolutely BANG!
With a few new wines launching we felt this was the best time to put these guys in the spotlight and to cluster up two incredible cuvees currently in stock
First up is Crystal 2021, a fun, bright and zippy Pet Nat from London urban winery, Renegade. Made from the Croatina grape which after harvest makes the voyage from Lombardy, Italy to Bethnal Green where it is whole bunch pressed and fermented in stainless steel. Incredibly fresh with notes of rhubarb and raspberries, another great bottle of bubbles from the Renegade team
Region: Lombardy, Italy/Bethnal Green, London
Bethnal Bubbles 3.1 is an altogether different beast to the original. The wine for this version is made from Pinot Noir, grown in Hertfordshire. Punchy and refreshing like a hoppy IPA with lovely acidity. It’s very hazy which contributes to the palate weight and finish. It has aromas of coconut, citrus, and tropical fruits as well as a slight saltiness on the tongue. It’s a bit lively so make sure it’s icy cold to avoid it foaming over. Can be drunk hazy or clear: leave it to stand up for 24+ hours to allow it to settle.
Producer: Evolution by Renegade
Region: Hertfordshire, England
Grapes: Pinot Noir & Hop Blend
Another new one from london's premier urban winery. Amy 2020, think Burgundy with a London twist. One for those who like the classics but appreciate things move with the times. Very slightly hazy, creamy and full-bodied with abundant new oak aromas, reminiscent of vanilla and spices. Ripe stone fruits on the palate.
Region: Lombardi, Italy/Bethnal Green, London
