One of our favourite Orange Wines, found early last year in the cellar of our local natural wine spot, Plateau. Slightly pinkish, peachy orange colour. Fairly intense, with a slight haze. The nose is pronounced and distinctive with aromas of pear drop, banana and pear. There’s also peach and apricot stone fruit and baked orchard fruit with floral notes of honeysuckle and white lilac blossom. Superbly textured with a lasting finish..
Alfredo Maestro Tejero’s vineyards are situated within the Ribera del Duero D.O., but Alfredo prefers not to participate in the D.O., so the wines are Vino de la Tierra de Castillo y León. Alfredo produces 100% natural wines, with absolutely no sulphur added in the vineyard or the winery, and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration. All vineyard treatments are natural, and many of them follow biodynamic practices. One of his plots, which spawns El Marciano, has 70-year-old vines on granitic soils lying at an incredible 1,150 metres elevation. His wines sometimes have a rustic quality about them, but in our opinion are all the better for it. Fruity, rich, structured and very moreish.
