What is Vegan Wine?
It might seem logical to assume that all wine is vegan, given that it's made from fermented grape juice. However, the winemaking process itself can make some wines unsuitable for those following a plant-based diet.
Before bottling, most wines undergo a clarifying process to remove tiny particles and impurities that naturally occur during fermentation, resulting in a clear, polished wine. This is achieved using fining agents, which bind with these particles, forming larger clumps that can be easily filtered out. Traditional fining agents often include animal-derived products like egg whites or gelatin.
Vegan wines, on the other hand, use alternative fining agents that are plant-based or mineral-based, making them suitable for those who wish to avoid animal products.
